The 26 Workers Who Died Building Howrah Bridge | Why We Travel to Kedarnath When Shiva Lives at Home | Why We Travel to Kedarnath When Shiva Lives at Home

The 3 AM Ghost Train of Naihati Junction

I’m standing on Platform 3 of Naihati Junction at 2:47 AM, and I’m regretting this.

It’s December-cold. The platform’s deserted except for one homeless man and a suspicious stray dog. I’m here investigating a ghost story that’s circulated for decades: the 3 AM train that arrives, opens its doors, sits for three minutes, and leaves – with nobody boarding or alighting.

A college student’s viral post three months ago claimed she saw it. Comments exploded – dozens claiming they’d seen it too. “Always at 3:02 AM exactly,” one wrote. Others called it nonsense.

Railway Board was polite but firm: “No scheduled train between 2-4 AM. Reports are likely maintenance trains or confusion.”

But maintenance trains don’t stop. And they don’t open passenger doors.

Retired Station Master Biswajit Dey: “I’ve seen it seven times. 3:02 AM, eight-coach train, lights on, completely empty. Stops exactly three minutes, then leaves.”

“Did you report it?”

He laughed. “To whom? They’d think I’m mad. Best to keep quiet.”

On August 23, 1967, a passenger train derailed outside Naihati due to sabotage. 17 dead, 60+ injured. The accident happened at 2:47 AM. The train was supposed to arrive at Naihati at 3:02 AM.

The same time the ghost train allegedly appears. Sightings began shortly after the accident.

Psychologist Dr. Ritu Malhotra: “Collective false memory reinforced by cultural narrative. Person A sees something ambiguous, shares the story. Person B hears it, and when they see anything unusual, their brain pattern-matches. They genuinely believe they saw it.”

“But why is the timing so consistent across decades?”

She paused. “That’s… odd.”

I waited at Platform 3 with a camera until 3:30 AM. Nothing appeared. I returned three more times. Still nothing.

Does that mean it doesn’t exist? It means I didn’t see it.

What I know:

  • No scheduled trains 2-4 AM
  • Two dozen people have reported seeing something
  • Descriptions are remarkably consistent
  • There’s a plausible psychological explanation
  • There’s a historical connection to the 1967 accident
  • Not a single photo exists despite smartphones

So what’s the truth? Ghosts? Time slip? Urban legend born from tragedy and psychology?

I don’t know. And honestly? That’s what makes it fascinating.

If you’re brave: Naihati Junction is easily accessible from Kolkata. Platform 3. 3:02 AM. Every night.

I can’t promise you’ll see anything. Just that it’ll be cold and uncomfortable.

But if you do see something… call me.
